South African trumpeter, fleugelhornist, composer, and singer Hugh Ramopolo Masekela is an acknowledged master of African jazz. He is also one of his country's most recognizable freedom fighters in the battle against apartheid. Masekela was born on April 4, 1939 in Witbank, a coal-mining town near Johannesburg, South Africa
