Joy of Cooking incorporated jazz, blues, latin, country, folk and r&b into their repertoire of laid back songs. All the members were in their late 20's when the group formed in Berkeley in 1967, group leaders Terry Garthwaite and Toni Brown becoming icons of the feminist movement, pioneering women being taken seriously as musicians. They originally started as a duo called Gourmet's Delight before adding David Garthwaite, Terry's younger brother, on bass. Next came Fritz Kasten on drums who had played in the pre Janis Joplin line up of Big Brother & The Holding Company and Ron Wilson, a classically trained pianist. They played around the bay area over the next few years building up a large fan base and a good reputation as a live act before being signed to Capitol in 1970. Their self-titled debut was well received and they toured nationally to promote it, releasing two further albums in the following 18 months after which the group disbanded whilst recording an unreleased fourth album, Same Old Song And Dance, in 1973. In 1972 Toni and Terry went to Nashville to record Cross-Country as a duo and continued to work together well into the seventies as well as having solo careers, Terry recording up to the present time.
