Ruth Wallis was born in New York City, New York. She studied dancing, voice and piano, so it was only natural that she would pursue a career in show business. Early in her career she married her manager, Hy Pastman. Although she played many nightclubs, she was featured at the Hotel Forrest in New York City in 1941.
Her need to step out of the shadow of the band-dominated performance scene prompted her to start writing her own material. Starting in 1948 she recorded risque tunes for established labels, but then went on to form her own company: The Wallis Original Record Corporation based in Linden, New Jersey. This company put out 78s, 45s, 78 albums, 45 extended plays and LPs of both the double entendre Wallis was so well known for, but also sophisticated ballads. By the around 1957 WORC had nine albums available. Wallis generally released a new album every Christmas. The company moved to Miami Beach, Florida before the catalog was sold to King.
Ruth Wallis composed the music and the lyrics for all of her songs. She generally performed in dinner clubs in larger U.S. Cities. Wallis spent most of her time in the United States, but in 1961 took her show overseas to Australia. Generally, she limited her time on the road each year to less than six months. Developing a music career wasn't the only priority in her life. The rest of every year she reserved for her family: Pastman and their two children.
Wallis continued singing sporadically and recorded several other LPs in the late 1960s. Artist info available at the blue pages website. She was an under the counter record artist.
